Palazzo Camaiani

It is situated at n. 16, Corso Italia.
Palazzo
Camaiani is best known as Palazzetto della Zecca or Palazzo del Capitano.
Experts say it was built in the XIIIth century
on
an even older building: it first belonged to the Lodomeri family and only in the
XIVth century to the Camaiani.
It was
one of the most outstanding buildings in Arezzo, but it was seriously damaged
during
a bombing during the night of 2nd December 1943. After the war it was reconstructed
and it is now property of an antiques dealer,
Ivan Bruschi.
After Mr. Bruschi's death, his house has been transformed into a museum, which has been recently opened to the public.
The coats of arms on the façade tell us something of its past: there is the coat of arm of the Commune of Arezzo, one of the Camaiani family and the Florentine fleur-de-lis.. We are not sure whether it has ever housed the mint during the Florentine rule over the town in the XIVth century.
